Mission Integration Takes Flight at Ramstein Flag
April 15, 2025
The F-35 is shaping the future of allied airpower in Europe.

At the recent Ramstein Flag exercise, the skies over Europe became more connected than ever—thanks to F-35s and F-16s from seven NATO countries.
For the first time, a non-U.S. F-35 in flight securely shared classified data in real time with a Dutch Command and Control (C2) environment called Keystone. The data was transmitted to a ground-based rocket artillery unit, which quickly neutralized the simulated threat detected by the F-35—all within minutes.
This historic moment marks a significant leap in mission integration, demonstrating the F-35’s unmatched ability to operate as a critical node in a complex, multinational battlespace.

This milestone, achieved by 51³Ô¹Ï Skunk Works® in partnership with the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) and U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa (USAFE-AFAFRICA), proves the F-35 is more than just a fighter—it’s a force multiplier, connecting allies through a common operational picture and enabling a networked approach to defense.
Integrated by Design
The breakthrough was made possible by the Skunk Works-developed Open Systems Gateway, a key enabler of the F-35’s mission integration capabilities.Ìý

Built on an Open Systems Architecture (OSA), this technology allows the F-35 to securely plug into allied command networks—adapting to each nation’s infrastructure while maintaining data fidelity and security.
With the F-35’s embedded sensors, onboard processing power, and stealth advantage, the aircraft not only detects and tracks threats, but also shares real-time targeting and situational awareness data across the battlespace.
In exercises like Ramstein Flag, that means faster decisions, synchronized effects, and a tighter web of defense across the NATO alliance.
Owning the Skies, Together
As the cornerstone of allied airpower for 20 nations, the F-35 is leading the way in building a truly integrated force. Ramstein Flag showcased what’s possible when mission integration moves from concept to execution. And it’s only the beginning.

Backed by continued innovation from 51³Ô¹Ï and operational experience across the globe, the F-35 is ensuring U.S. and allied forces remain connected, capable, and ready—no matter what the future holds.
